FAQs
-
Pet insurance is a type of insurance policy for your companion animals (dogs, cats and sometimes other pets) that helps reimburse you for veterinary costs when your pet is hurt or becomes ill.
Unlike typical human health insurance, you often pay the veterinarian up front and then submit a claim to the insurance provider for reimbursement. -
Veterinary care is increasingly expensive (advanced diagnostics, surgeries, etc.).
An unexpected accident or illness can lead to large bills — insurance gives you more financial flexibility.
It can help you focus on your pet’s health rather than just cost.
-
Coverage varies by plan and provider, but generally:
Accidents: injuries, swallowed objects, broken bones, toxic ingestion, etc.
Illnesses: many plans cover diseases, infections, some hereditary conditions (depending on policy).
Some plans offer wellness or preventive care add-ons (vaccinations, check-ups, dental cleanings) — but these are often optional and separate.
-
Important exclusions and limitations typically include:
Pre-existing conditions: any condition that showed signs or symptoms before coverage began is usually excluded.
Routine or preventive care (unless you add wellness coverage): standard checkups, vaccinations, grooming, etc may not be covered by default.
Some hereditary or breed-specific conditions may be excluded or have higher cost.
Often waiting periods apply (you must wait some days/weeks after policy starts before coverage kicks in).
